We could see Magnetic Is from Townsville it was so close so we took a ferry across for the day, its a lovely spot, very relaxing -well, apart from being whizzed around on a tube by a speed boat!
Bowen was a stopover on the way to Airlie Beach and it was such a lovely surprise, a really interesting town and very pretty. The boys made friends with the girl who lived at our caravan park after she was eyeing off their match box cars in the dirt! and spent the day with us as our tour guide and companion and even turned up with her dinner at our caravan to join us for a movie! Great young girl. Bowen is where 'Australia' was filmed due to its old buildings dating back to the early 1800's -they completely covered the town roads in dirt for the filming. Along the esplanade there is a big photo board with photos of the filming. Once again the esplanade was a great community spot with water parks, skate parks and picnic areas. There was also an information area about the Catalina planes used during the war and they took off from Bowen after Port Moresby was bombed and Australia was worried about how close the enemy was getting. We also went to Horseshoe Bay, one of Bowen's many pristine beaches and snorkelled some reef just meters off shore and we were lucky enough to catch the market along another stretch of beach. The sun started coming out from here too which made it extra special. I really loved Bowen!
