Naracoorte Caves
Naracoorte was a surprisingly lovely town, bigger and more lively than i was expecting. The caves were fantastic. One of the photos is of an archaelogical dig which took 2 years just for that small area and the oldest layer so far is over 14000 years old. They've found lots of ancient fossils in these caves dating back as far as 500,000 years -they've reconstructed some of the animals as shown in photos above! We also did a 'bat' cave tour. It starts off in a room where you watch bats via infra red cameras and they give a talk on the bats -we were lucky enough to be the only ones on the tour so the boys got to ask lots of questions and poke around uninteruppted! You cant actually go into the bat cave because their poo harbours dangerous bacteria which can make you very sick if inhaled -plus its very smelly apparently!
Next to the caravan park is the Naracoorte swimming lake which is amazing too. Empty this time of year but would come back to this area another summer to check it out and have a swim -even has sand to one side like a beach and a jetty. The whole area would be worth more exploring -its known as the Limestone Coast and there are some limestone lakes that you can snorkel in and see for hundreds of metres as they're as clear as chrystal.
Off to Adelaide tomorrow for a few days. Added a rest day there before we head into the outback!!
