In the late afternoon we headed to a camp by some flood plains, very pretty. The land we were on for the day was 170 sq kms of aboriginal land so there were no tourists. The boys helped build the camp oven, first hot rocks then sticks with shreds of paperbark to help light it, then wet eucalyptus leaves went on, then the meat and veg, then it was all covered with the big sheet of paperbark. We ate our bush carrots with wild buffalo and pig and the boys and the tour guide also made damper and we washed it all down with billy tea and watched the sunset!
this is making string with pandanus leaves. so much work and patience is needed. you have to strip the leaves into thin pieces then roll them together to make one piece shown below. Hundreds of these later, then dye them with different colors, then weave them together to make a dilly bag etc It was not easy, Patsy and her sister Jennifer are very skilled.
grinding the meat to make it more tender and palatable! you could taste the eucalyptus through it too..
